N100 vs N150 for Docker and Plex: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

Intel's N150 is the Twin Lake refresh of the popular N100 — same 6W power envelope, same 4 efficient cores, slightly higher clocks. Mini PC makers are slapping it into new boxes at a small premium. The question for home server buyers: does any of that matter for Docker and Plex?

Honesty box: this is a spec-based analysis, not a lab benchmark. Clock and architecture differences are Intel's claimed specs; real-world deltas are small.

What actually changed: N100 vs N150

For Docker: you won't notice

Containers are mostly idle. Pi-hole, Uptime Kuma, a reverse proxy, a note-taking app, a download client — a dozen of these barely wake up four efficient cores. The N150's ~200MHz clock bump translates to roughly a 5–10% improvement in bursty tasks on paper, which is invisible in a stack of idling containers. For Docker, buy whichever box is cheaper.

For Plex: same Quick Sync, same story

Both chips carry the same Intel UHD graphics with Quick Sync, so hardware transcoding capability is effectively identical. Either chip handles a couple of 1080p transcodes; neither is a 4K-transcode monster. If Plex is your main workload, the decision that matters is direct play vs transcode in your client settings — not N100 vs N150. (Our top picks note the Plex limits of each box.)

When the N150 is worth it

  • Price parity: if the N150 box costs the same as the N100 equivalent, take the newer chip — newer firmware support, marginally better efficiency.
  • You run bursty compiles or builds: the clock bump helps short, single-threaded bursts (compiling, thumbnail generation).
  • Future resale: the newer chip will look less dated in two years.

When it isn't

  • A $30+ premium: that's real money for ~5–10% on paper. Put it toward more RAM or a bigger SSD instead.
  • Your workload is Docker-only: the N100 is already overkill for most container stacks.

The bottom line

The N150 is a refresh, not a revolution. For a home server running Docker and Plex, buy on price, ports, and RAM — not on N100 vs N150. Check both generations on our best mini PC for home server shortlist and take whichever deal is better this week.
